Building Knowledge Economies: Advanced Strategies for Development

by World Bank

English -- Published June 2007 -- ISBN: 0-8213-6957-1

Price: $ 8.00

In many parts of the world, knowledge is being put to work to accelerate and deepen the development process, promoting innovation and helping to generate wealth and jobs. This book discusses advanced development strategies that take into account education, information and communication technology, infrastructure, innovation, and the prerequisite economic and institutional regimes.

Globalization for Development: Trade, Finance, Aid, Migration, and Policy (Revised Edition)

by Ian Goldin , Kenneth Reinert

English -- Published May 2007 by Palgrave Macmillan & World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-6929-6

Price: $ 10.00

Globalization and its relation to poverty reduction and development is not well understood. The book identifies the ways in which globalization can overcome poverty or make it worse. The book defines the big historical trends, identifies main global flows - trade, finance, aid, migration, and ideas - and examines how each can contribute to undermine economic development.

By considering what helps and what does not, the book presents policy recommendations to make globalization more effective as a vehicle for shared growth and prosperity. It will be of interest to students, researchers and anyone interested in the effects of globalization in today's economy and in international development issues.

"This book is essential reading for anyone interested in globalization and development. It provides important new insights and perspectives into how global flows of finance, trade, migrants, and ideas shape development and advances the debate by identifying urgently needed policy changes for a more inclusive globalization."

- Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize for Economics,

and Professor of Economics, Columbia University

"Globalization may need defense, but it also needs reform. The authors tell us the story so far and go on to propose ways and means of getting to a happier endng. The ways identified, based on fine empirical assessment, certainly deserve our serious attention."

- Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize for Economics,

Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy, Harvard University

"This book cuts through the confusion of many discussions of globalization. In particular, it gives a clear definition in terms of the basic flows that embody interaction among countries, including trade, migration, and so on. This provides a clear analytical framework for analyzing the impact of globalization on development and thus on reducing poverty. It is a first class piece of work and a 'must-read' for those seeking clarity on one of the great issues of our time."

- Sir Nicholas Stern, Head of Government Economic Service, United Kingdom

"This book draws on a wealth of cross-country experience and knowledge to demonstrate that globalization has the ability to contribute to poverty alleviation, but only under certain circumstances. As such, it provides invaluable insight to development practitioners and policy makers alike. It contains not only a lucid analytical framework in which to analyze these tradeoffs, but also some invigorating ideeas on how globalization can be made to work for the poor. In this, it is a vital read for anyone concerned about a fairer sharing of our communal prosperity."

- Trevor A. Manuel, Minister of Finance, South Africa

"Ian Goldin's contribution to the debate on global governance and development effectiveness comes from someone who has been at the center of the action for a long time. His collaboration with Ken Reinert is a must for those who are looking for both courageous conceptual design and practical solutions."

- Kemal Dervis, United Nations Development Programme Administrator

and former Minister of Finance, Turkey

A Billion Bootstraps: Microcredit, Barefoot Banking, and the Business Solution for Ending Poverty

by Phil Smith , Eric Thurman -- with contributions by Muhammad Yunus

English -- Published May 2007 by McGraw-Hill -- ISBN: 0-07-148997-5

Price: $ 27.00

A bold manifesto by two business leaders, A Billion Bootstraps shows why microcredit is the world's most powerful poverty-fighting movement-and an unbeatable investment for your charitable donations.

A Billion Bootstraps unearths the roots of the microcredit revolution, revealing how the pioneering work of people such as Dr. Muhammad Yunus-winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize-is giving hope to billions. Philanthropist and self-made millionaire Phil Smith and microcredit expert and consultant Eric Thurman provide a riveting narrative that explores how these small loans, arranged by "barefoot bankers," enable impoverished people to start small businesses, support their families, and improve local economies. By paying back their loans instead of simply accepting handouts, men and women around the world are continually giving others the same opportunity to change their futures.

Smith and Thurman also examine why traditional charity programs, while providing short-term relief, often perpetuate the problems they are trying to alleviate, and how applying investment principles to philanthropy is the key to reversing poverty permanently.

A Billion Bootstraps explains how ordinary people can accelerate the microcredit movement by investing charitable donations in specific programs and then leveraging those contributions so the net cost to lift one person out of poverty is remarkably low. You'll discover how to get more for your money by donating with the mind-set of an investor and calculating measurable returns-returns that will change lives and societies forever.

For the greatest returns, invest in humanity

"Phil and Eric have done us a favor by breaking down the challenges of growth for microfinance into bite-sized elements any reader can benefit from, and have challenged and inspired us all to get more involved ... they have done an admirable job showing us what is happening, what is possible, and what we can do from their perspective as successful business people."-Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, from the Foreword

"A Billion Bootstraps shows how successful people in the West can use sound business practices to create economic opportunities for poor families in other parts of the world."-Sir John Templeton, legendary investor and founder of the John Templeton Foundation

"True charity attacks life's greatest injustices, demands major, demonstrable results, and avoids ego gratification. In A Billion Bootstraps, Phil Smith and Eric Thurman make an effective case that microcredit is the purest charitable strategy."

-George Kaiser, founder of the multi-billion dollar Tulsa Community Foundation and

chairman of BOK Financial Corp.

A Year Without "Made in China": One Family's True Life Adventure in the Global Economy

by Sara Bongiorni  -- Foreword by Joel L. Naroff, PhD, President, Naroff Economic Advisors, Inc. Chief Economist, Commerce Bank

English -- Published June 2007 by John Wiley and Sons -- ISBN: 0-470-11613-7

Price: $ 27.00

"Over the past century, Americans' images of China have fluctuated wildly from victim, to heroic fighter, to Communist fanatic. We have loved them and feared them. And now, as Sara Bongiorni shows in vivid personal terms, we are in a new phase where it is a little of both. China has become an economic giant that can step on our toes, but that we must embrace."

-John Maxwell Hamilton, Dean and Hopkins P. Breazeale Foundation Professor Manship School of Mass Communication, Louisiana State University

"When the writer resolves to forgo Chinese imports for one year, she leads her lively family in a fascinating experiment that requires surprising feats of will power and ingenuity. The family's adventure through the maze of modern America's consumer life is both thought provoking and delightful to read. Those little 'Made in China' labels will never seem the same again."

-Mark Fabiani, former White House special counsel and media/political consultant

"Breaking up is indeed hard to do, as Sara Bongiorni proves in this winning memoir of her household's one-year boycott of Chinese products. Equal parts Erma Bombeck and economics, A Year Without 'Made in China' is that lively miracle-a crash course in globalization that is also consummately entertaining."

-Danny Heitman, columnist for The Advocate (Baton Rouge)

"A funny and engaging story about one family's experiment in our global economy. The Bongiorni family does without sneakers, sunglasses, and printer cartridges, but develops a dogged creativity and much needed sense of humor. The myriad moral complexities in the relationship between American consumers and Chinese factory are evident in each shopping trip."

-Pietra Rivoli, PhD, Professor, McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University and author, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy

"You will never go shopping the same way again! It's impossible to read Sara Bongiorni's book and not be captivated by the complexity and challenge of her task, and to then try it yourself for a day and fail miserably at it by lunchtime. This is the rare book that makes you think about how big global issues actually hit home, and it will have you discussing those issues with your friends."

-Chuck Jaffe, Senior Columnist, MarketWatch host, Your Money (www.yourmoneyradio.net)

Knowledge and the Wealth of Nations: A Story of Economic Discovery (paperback version)

by David Warsh

English -- Published May 2006 by W. W. Norton -- ISBN: 0-393-05996-0

Price: $ 19.00

A stimulating and inviting tour of modern economics centered on the story of one of its most important breakthroughs.

In 1980, the twenty-four-year-old graduate student Paul Romer tackled one of the oldest puzzles in economics. Eight years later he solved it. This book tells the story of what has come to be called the new growth theory: the paradox identified by Adam Smith more than two hundred years earlier, its disappearance and occasional resurfacing in the nineteenth century, the development of new technical tools in the twentieth century, and finally the student who could see further than his teachers.

Fascinating in its own right, new growth theory helps to explain dominant first-mover firms like IBM or Microsoft, underscores the value of intellectual property, and provides essential advice to those concerned with the expansion of the economy. Like James Gleick's Chaos or Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe, this revealing book takes us to the frontlines of scientific research; not since Robert Heilbroner's classic work The Worldly Philosophers have we had as attractive a glimpse of the essential science of economics.

Corporate Governance Lessons from Transition Economy Reforms

Edited by Merritt B. Fox , Michael A. Heller

English -- Published September 2006 by Princeton University Press -- ISBN: 0-691-12561-9

Price: $ 34.00

Corporate Governance Lessons from Transition Economy Reforms explores a timely topic at the intersection of economics, law, and policy reform. To date, most sophisticated theoretical work on corporate governance has focused on advanced market economies. In post-socialist countries, corporate finance and transition economics scholars have often done little more than convey the received theory to transition policymakers.

This volume focuses, for the first time, on the reverse concern: what, if anything, do the reform experiences of transition countries teach about corporate governance theory more generally? To investigate this question, Merritt Fox and Michael Heller have assembled a stellar group of corporate governance theorists. The answers are startling.

The principal essays approach the problem from three complementary perspectives that form the organizing themes of the book. The first part refines core corporate theory terms. The second presents important empirical work that explores the channels through which "good corporate governance" may link to the real economy. The final part links corporate governance theory to practical reforms. After fifteen years of experience, practice can now inform theory.

Together, these essays present a comprehensive new view on a provocative theme. Written in an accessible style, they will be of interest to a broad range of scholars, commentators, and policymakers.

Using Economic Indicators to Improve Investment Analysis, 3rd edition

by Evalina M. Tainer

English -- Published March 2006 by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. -- ISBN: 0-471-74096-9

Price: $ 37.00

Praise for Using Economic Indicators to Improve Investment Analysis THIRD EDITION

"Once again, Evelina Tainer has cleared the fog of economic confusion. Her work deciphers and encapsulates the metrics employed by professional speculators in the magnitude of George Soros and Edwin Lefevre. This thesis is a requisite desktop reference for every market participant." -John Alda, Managing Director, Alda Macro Fund Management

"Tainer's latest book is a tour de force through the world of esoteric economic numbers and jargon. Written in layman's terms, her latest book can be understood by anyone interested in navigating the world of professional economics." -Kathleen Camilli, founder and Principal of Camilli Economics, LLC

"A virtual bible of how economic indicators are constructed and used. Important tidbits of history are mixed with present-day nuances to explain why we should care about all the economic indicators." -Allen Grommet, Senior Economist, Cambridge Consumer Credit Index

"Tainer has produced an essential reference source for any economist and public policy analyst interested in the careful review of economic releases and their impact on capital markets. This work reflects her long experience in the profession and her feel for the financial market. I especially enjoyed her market reaction and key points sections on some of my favorite and sometimes infamous indicators." -John E. Silvia, Chief Economist, Wachovia Corporation

"This book is an indispensable resource for anyone that wants a practical understanding of the economy and how it is measured. The information is clear, concise, and will help investors at all levels leverage the vast amount of economic data available." -Jesse Harriott, PhD, Vice President of Research, Monster Worldwide, Inc.

Transforming the Development Landscape: The Role of the Private Sector

Edited by Lael Brainard

English -- Published August 2006 by Brookings Institution Press -- ISBN: 0-8157-1124-7

Price: $ 16.00

Private sector activity is an essential element of any successful economic development plan. It shapes the investment climate, mobilizes innovation and financing, and can increase or decrease the level of harm that might accompany development projects. This volume, emerging from the Brookings Blum Roundtable, investigates ways to galvanize the private sector and bring its resources to bear in the war against global poverty. The authors describe how the private sector affects growth and poverty alleviation, and they examine the social and environmental impact of private sector activities. In addition to offering a clear overview of the current issues, Lael Brainard and her colleagues assess current initiatives and provide guidance on new activities and partnerships that could potentially improve global economic conditions.

Local Governance in Industrial Countries

Edited by Anwar Shah

English -- Published July 2006 -- ISBN: 0-8213-6328-X

Price: $ 10.00

The information revolution, in recent years, has worked as a catalyst to create a globalized yet localized world with local governments playing an ever-increasing role in the domestic and global economy. How these governments will be able to shoulder their responsibilities - especially the delivery of local services - more effectively is the concern of this book. The book, edited by Anwar Shah, provides a comparative perspective on international practices in local governance and draws lessons from these experiences to guide future reform. Case studies include the following countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, the Nordic countries, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

This important new series represents a response to several independent evaluations in recent years that have argued that development practitioners and policy makers dealing with public sector reforms in developing countries and, indeed, anyone with a concern for effective public governance could benefit from a synthesis of newer perspectives on public sector reforms. This series distills current wisdom and presents tools of analysis for improving the efficiency, equity, and efficacy of the public sector. Leading public policy experts and practitioners have contributed to the series.

Economic Growth, Poverty, and Household Welfare in Vietnam

Edited by David Dollar , Paul Glewwe , Nisha Agrawal – English -- Published April 2004 by World Bank

Price: $ 9

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Vietnam’s economic performance was dismal, and Vietnam was one of the poorest countries in the world. With the adoption of new market-oriented policies in the late 1980?s, economic growth increased rapidly. Vietnam achieved an extremely high rate of economic growth in the 1990?s, averaging 8% per year from 1990 to 2000. This economic growth was accompanied by a large reduction in poverty (reduced from 58% in 1993 to 37% in 1998), dramatic increases in school enrollment, and a rapid decrease in child malnutrition.

Economic Growth, Poverty, and Household Welfare in Vietnam examines the causes of Vietnam?s economic growth and its prospects for future growth. It also examines the impact of economic growth on poverty, school enrollment, child health, and a variety of other socio-economic outcomes. Finally, it examines the nature of poverty and the impact of government policies that attempt to reduce poverty.

Based on unusually rich macroeconomic and household survey data from Vietnam, this book is an important resource for development practitioners, drawing lessons for Vietnam and for other low-income developing countries.

International Migration, Economic Development & Policy

Edited by Maurice Schiff , Caglar Ozden

English -- Published June 2007 by Palgrave Macmillan & World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-6935-0

Price: $ 10.00

International migration has become a central element of international relations and global integration due to its rapidly increasing economic, social, and cultural impact in both source and destination countries. This book provides new evidence on the impact of migration and remittances on several development indicators, including innovative thinking about the nexus between migration and birth rates. In addition, the book identifies the effect of host country policies on migration flows, examines the determinants of return and repeat migration, and explores the degree of success of return migrants upon return to their country of origin.

"This volume represents another outstanding contribution of the International Migration and Development Research Program, an effort I strongly supported from its inception and which established the World Bank's intellectual leadership in an increasingly important area. Analysts and policy makers will find that the studies presented here constitute an excellent basis for improving migration policies and enhancing their development and poverty alleviation impact."

- James D. Wolfensohn

Chairman, Wolfensohn Capital Partners

Former President of the World Bank

"International migration, long considered an exotic subject, has finally become a significant phenomenon on the world stage. This is an important volume by two of the most influential researchers on the subject. It addresses with considerable insight the key issues that the phenomenon raises. Policy makers and research scholars alike will profit from reading it."

- Jagdish Bhagwati

University Professor, Economics and Law, Columbia University

Author of In Defense of Globalization

"Migration has become a global phenomenon of utmost importance for the further development and well-being of mankind. This volume collects a fine blend of articles providing rigorous empirical and policy analysis from all over the globe. The new global migration database and contributions on development, host country policy, and return migration will capture the attention of a hungry generation of scholars in migration, labor, and development."

Ten Steps to a Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation System: A Handbook for Development Practitioners

by Jody Zall Kusek , Ray C. Rist

English -- Published June 2004 by World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-5823-5

Price: $ 10.00

An effective state is essential to achieving socio-economic and sustainable development. With the advent of globalization, there are growing pressures on governments and organizations around the world to be more responsive to the demands of internal and external stakeholders for good governance, accountability and transparency, greater development effectiveness, and delivery of tangible results. Governments, parliaments, citizens, the private sector, NGOs, civil society, international organizations and donors are among the stakeholders interested in better performance. As demands for greater accountability and real results have increased, there is an attendant need for enhanced results-based monitoring and evaluation of policies, programs, and projects.

This Handbook provides a comprehensive ten-step model that will help guide development practitioners through the process of designing and building a results-based monitoring and evaluation system. These steps begin with a ?Readiness Assessment? and take the practitioner through the design, management, and importantly, the sustainability of such systems. The Handbook describes each step in detail, the tasks needed to complete each one, and the tools available to help along the way.

The Global Family Planning Revolution: Three Decades of Population Policies and Programs

Edited by Warren C. Robinson , John A. Ross

English -- Published June 2007 by the World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-6951-2

Price: $ 13.00

The striking upsurge in population growth rates in developing countries at the close of World War II gained force during the next decade. From the 1950s to the 1970s, scholars and advocacy groups publicized the trend and drew troubling conclusions about its economic and ecological implications. Private educational and philanthropic organizations, government, and international organizations joined in the struggle to reduce fertility. Three decades later this movement has seen changes beyond anyone's most optimistic dreams, and global demographic stabilization is expected in this century.

The Global Family Planning Revolution preserves the remarkable record of this success. Its editors and authors offer more than a historical record. They disccuss important lessons for current and future initiatives of the international community. Some programs succeeded while others initially failed, and the analyses provide valuable guidance for emerging health-related policy objectives and responses to global challenges.

"The promotion of family planning in poor countries was one of the great development successes of the past 50 years. The unique contribution of this book lies in the 23 country case studies that doocument the diverse ways in which obstacles were overcome and success achieved. The volume provides an invaluable historical documentation of one of the most important developments of the past 50 years, the curbing off rapid population growth in poorer regions."

- John Cleland

Professor of Medical Demography, Centre for Population Studies,

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, United Kindom

and President, International Union for the Scientific Study of Population

"There is wonderful history captured in these chapters, and the 23 country case studies individually will convey valuable lessons to students of policy making and program management, as well as social transformation, as to how a national movement such as family planning gains traction and in most cases is very successful in changing contraceptive practice."

- Amy Tsui

Director, Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health,

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

"A good deal has been written on the evolution of national family planning policies and programs, but this book is a major addition to this literature. Its coverage and the expertise of the contributors, who combine first-rate scholarly credentials with first-hand experience in the countries they are writing about, are among the features that make this book so distinguished. The country-specific chapters bring together much hard-to-find material and provide uniformly thoughtful analyses."

- Peter J. Donaldson

President, Population Council, New York, New York

Gender, Conflict, and Development

by Tsjeard Bouta , Georg Frerks , Ian Bannon

English -- Published November 2004 by the World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-5968-1

Price: $ 6.00

Gender, Conflict, and Development was written as an effort to fill a gap between the Bank?s work on gender mainstreaming and its agenda in conflict and development. The authors identify a link between gender and conflict issues and provide the most comprehensive review of external and internal sources on gender and conflict, with a particular focus on policy relevance for an institution such as the Bank.

The book highlights the gender dimensions of conflict, organized around major relevant themes such as female combatants, sexual violence, formal and informal peace processes, the legal framework, work, the rehabilitation of social services and community-driven development. And for each theme it analyzes how conflict changes gender roles and the policy options that might be considered to build on positive aspects while minimizing adverse changes.

The suggested policy options and approaches aim to take advantage of the opportunity afforded by violent conflict to encourage change and build more inclusive and gender balanced social, economic and political relations in post-conflict societies. The book concludes by identifying some of the remaining challenges and themes that require additional analysis and research.

The book will be of interest to policymakers, scholars, researchers, graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of conflict studies/regional studies/gender studies.

The Other Half of Gender: Men's Issues in Development

Edited by Maria C. Correia , Ian Bannon

English -- Published June 2006 by the World Bank -- ISBN: 0-8213-6505-3

Price: $ 10.00

"The vulnerabilities of men have received limited attention in development research and programming. In Liberia, men's lack of access to employment and land and their loss of traditional power and authority lay at the heart of the violence and conflict that led to the near destruction of the country. It is thus important that men's concerns, in addition to women's, be bought into focus in the development literature and practice. This book by the World Bank makes an important contribution to this end."

Her Excellency Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

President of Liberia

The Other Half of Gender brings the gender and development debate full circle - from a much-needed focus on empowering women to a more comprehensive gender framework that considers gender as a system that affects both women and men. It draws on a slowly emerging realization that attaining the vision of gender equality will be difficult, if not impossible, without changing the ways in which masculinities are defined and acted upon.

International Human Rights Internship Program

The International Human Rights Internship Program's (IHRIP) mission and work are based on the belief that human rights activists have knowledge and skills, as a result of their day-to-day work, that are important to the success not only of their own work, but the work of other activists and organizations, whether in their own or in other countries and regions. The human rights movement--in specific countries and regions as well as internationally--is strengthened through the exchange of this knowledge, experience and expertise. In line with this conviction, IHRIP makes grants available to human rights organizations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, East and Central Europe and CIS countries to enable their staff to undertake professional development exchange projects. A project can be:

·          A professional attachment, through which a staff member from an organization in one country serves as a temporary staff member of a host organization in another country, acquiring on-the-job training in a specific area of work or skill.

·          An on-site training, in which an individual from one country who has particular experience and expertise in a specific area of work provides training to the staff of an organization in another country.

·          A study tour, through which a staff member from an organization learns more about a specific area of work or about a particular strategy or approach to work by visiting and consulting with two or more human rights or human rights-related institutions in one or more other countries.

Deadlines for applications: August 31, 2007 & December 31, 2007.
